N is for Newfoundland
James Buchanan (1857-1861), Ulysses S. Grant (1869-1877), and Rutherford B. Hayes (1877-1881).
Newfoundland
President James Buchanan enjoyed the company of a Newfie named Lara. There is very little information about her but she reportedly weighed around 170 pounds and had a strange habit of sleeping with one eye open. Because photography was expensive and most people had never seen a Newfoundland, a hand drawn picture of Lara was published (see below) so the public could see what she looked like. As a result, she became a minor celebrity.
First Son Jessie Grant was given a Newfoundland named Faithful when his father entered office. Because Jessie was heartbroken over the earlier death of his other dogs, President Grant sent the message out to his staffers: “If this dog dies, every employee in the White House will be at once discharged.” I’m fairly certain Faithful was very well cared for!! President Rutherford B. Hayes had a Newfoundland named Hector, but not much is known about him. (representative photo)
There was one other Newfie in the WH but I’m saving him for another day!!
